The appeal comes from two characteristics of the service:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">&#8211; Amazon claims 99.999999999% annual durability. Data is redundant within a storage site and across more than one \u00a0site, so there is some insurance against <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_swan_theory\" target=\"_blank\">black swan<\/a> events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; $0.011 \/ GB \/ month. So for me, a run-of-the-mill MRI experiment costs about 11 cents per month to archive.<\/p>\n<p>There are drawbacks, here&#8217;s the biggest:\u00a0Retrieving data is potentially expensive, and the billing rate is not easy to understand. Amazon explains reasonably well in the billing portion of this <a href=\"http:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/glacier\/faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\">FAQ<\/a>. An <a href=\"http:\/\/liangzan.net\/aws-glacier-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\">unofficial calculator <\/a>helps too.<\/p>\n<p>For me, this is disaster insurance to supplement onsite backup. If disaster strikes, the costs associated with retrieval will be bearable.
